StoryLine

Why volunteer with StoryLine?

Reading is a critical part of the development of a child. Being able to read is a fundamental skill that leads to successful living. Reading aloud is one of the most effective ways that parents and caregivers can help children learn to read.

How do the children benefit?

Children that call in to StoryLine benefit in numerous ways. By hearing a kind voice and a story being read to them, children will gain not only educational benefits, but social and emotional rewards as well.

Reading aloud helps children to:

• develop stronger language skills
• improve vocabulary
• learn to ask questions about the story
• learn to connect pictures and words
• develop listening skills
• develop a lifelong love of reading
• learn that reading is fun and valuable
• stimulate brain development
• associate reading with warm pleasant feelings
• gain knowledge about a variety of topics
• explore social and moral issues and behaviors
• become more skilled and independent readers
• become motivated to read more on their own
• promote self-confidence and self-esteem
• sharpen problem solving skills
• participate in positive social interaction

By taking time to volunteer and read a story you will brighten and enrich a child’s day. The children hearing your story will truly appreciate the time and effort put into the StoryLine Program.
